Chapter 12

Gage

The next morning, I saw Lily hurrying across the square from her shop. She was moving toward the Sweet Spot. I whistled, and she looked around before her face split into a wide grin and she changed directions and walked to where I was standing. My breath caught in my chest as she drew close. Her soft brown eyes sparkled, and I knew that look. She was up to something and it was only a matter of time until I’d find out what.

“Gage. I didn’t expect to see you out here this morning.”

“Doing a little walk around.”

She nodded. “Checking the scene again?”

Before I could answer, she said, “I’ve done that several times. Replaying what I saw last week and I’m still coming up empty. I know he died from the gunshot, but I never heard it. All I heard was the crash.” She shuddered, as I’m sure she recalled that sound.

“Whoever fired the shot used a silencer.”

She recoiled for a fraction of a second and then leaned into me. “Do you know what I discovered last night?”

“I do not know.” She was so cute when she got that bookish grin.

“That you can also call a silencer a suppressor. They’re actually used interchangeably. I was looking up information about the shell casings and when I read it at first, I thought it was a misprint.”

“That’s true, but most folks use silencer.”

She nodded. “I read that too, but are you sure?”

I nodded, reluctant to share all the details since I didn’t want her to take the information and run with it. As she followed the trail of clues, I was positive she had uncovered more than I knew. “We’re sure.”

“What about the shell casings? If the perp”—she grinned as she used police jargon—“was careful enough to use the suppressor”—she winked—“why leave the casings behind?”

I looked around. Was anyone close enough to hear our conversation? I lowered my voice anyway. One never knew how conversations might carry. “The caliber that killed Teddy was a twenty-two, not a nine millimeter.”

“A ruse to distract.” She nodded, her brow furrowed. “I’m assuming you’ve checked to see who has one registered.”

Lily had a sharp brain and if she had wanted to be a cop, she would have been amazing. “No one in our suspect pool.” I nodded in the direction of Tucker’s Hardware and then down the street toward Gretchen’s office. “Tucker and Gretchen both have a powerful motive.”

“Not just them. Everyone who used Teddy as a real estate agent for the last year might carry a grudge. When I was checking records, I realized you are right and this potential scheme had to have started around the time he sold the Busch home.”

“Do you think Jerilyn was unhappy with the transaction?” I knew Lily and Jerilyn had talked on a couple occasions. Maybe she had let something slip.

Chewing her lower lip, she shook her head. “No. You won’t swindle your girlfriend’s family.” A sharp look came into her eye. “I need to cross-reference who has
