Chapter Ten

As I dressed, my phone started to ring on my dresser. Annoyed, I reached for it, trying to button up my shirt at the same time. It was Jenna, probably wondering where the hell I was. It was almost ten. I usually arrived no later than nine. Maybe she had heard about what happened with Drake.

“Hello?” I answered, shivering when Ethan’s hand trailed over my ass and down my thigh. I glanced over at him. He smiled, then grabbed his pants off the floor.

“Where the fuck are you? Did you hear what happened to Zander? Drake’s the new leader. How the fuck did that happen?” Jenna yelled into the phone like some kind of psycho.

“Calm down, Jenna,” I told her.

“Calm down? How the fuck am I supposed to be calm? How are you calm? This is big news, and I’m not even sure if it’s good or not. Last time I heard, Drake was sick, and Zander was supposed to be one of the most powerful Vampires out there.”

I explained everything that happened, from Drake’s past and the spirit to Heather’s necklace sucking out his power. She was surprised I started a fight with Heather, feeling the need to point out that I did have feelings for Drake. I glanced at Ethan, feeling guilty over what we did. However, I didn’t regret a single moment of it. If Jenna saw the new Drake, she’d begin to question whether or not we could still have what we had before, too.

“He used magic to rip Zander’s heart out of his chest, Jenna. This is not the Drake we know. He’s now dark and angry.”

I walked to the closet to find some heels. I’d rather be wearing jeans, but I had a feeling people were going to want to talk about the new Vampire leader. I didn’t even know what to do about the fact one of our Witches was murdered by them. Should I approach Drake and ask if he’d be willing to investigate? How much had our relationship changed? I was almost afraid to find out. He didn’t seem very receptive the night before.

Jenna sighed. “He’s the same guy. He just has more power now. In my opinion, this is a good thing. Zander needed to be taken out. He seemed to have an ulterior motive. I’m not sure what it was, but it wasn’t going to benefit the Witches.”

She was right, I knew that, but it didn’t mean Drake was the best choice to become Leader. He seemed dangerous and almost out of control. Or maybe he’d always been that way and I just never knew it because he was weak. It didn’t matter. I was going to have to face him eventually.

After promising Jenna I would be there in ten minutes, I hung up. Looking around, I realized Ethan was gone. I had no idea when he even left. I shook my head, frowning, thinking about what we did the night before. Should I feel bad? Maybe I needed to.
