RIO

That’s my cue. I add a sentinel paw on the wolf side of the scale. Listen, scrappy friend. Hear him through.

Claws slice at my paw. She’s his friend, but the dominance difference between them is too big. She knows it. He knows it, too.

He does—but I don’t think that’s where he’s headed.

Evan holds up his other hand, which is somehow doing the magic of keeping dozens of wolves and cats absolutely silent. “Family bonds have the strongest effect, right?”

Not a single cell of Adrianna’s body gives away just how gobsmacked she is to be listening to a former asshole use her words to fix his pack. “Yes. Family bonds can overpower almost any other aspect of wolf math.”

My wolf snickers. Silly wolves who like numbers.

One who likes them a whole lot sharpens even more. “Does it say anywhere in the small print that those family bonds need to be genetic ones?”

Hoot sucks in a breath.

Reese’s eyes glisten.

Evan holds out his hands to the small, scrappy wolf facing him. “The kitties in these woods collect wolves, and the same one collected you and me. Which means you’re my sister.” He grins. “So I’m totally fighting you over who gets to steal Reese’s bacon. But not about this.”

Hoot studies him.

A sentinel once again adds a very gentle paw—to Evan’s scale, this time. She’s listening, but she needs to see the answer of his wolf.

He snorts. “I’m not a stupidhead who thinks small girls can’t beat him up. I know what the right order is in this lineup.” He inhales and drops a tiny corner of what Reese called his cloaking device. “So does my wolf.”

I don’t have to do anything to make sure she sees it. Hoot Dunn sees truth as well as any shifter alive.

My sentinel exhales as she tackles Evan, kitty style, and lands them both on top of a cat alpha. There are very few wolves who would have accepted that off-ramp from a dominance challenge, but the Dunns don’t believe in genetics.

Cats rain out of the trees above them, which apparently surprises Colin—and adds enough fur to the mix that it takes an extra heartbeat to hear his snarl.

A wall of hissing responds.

Hayden strolls over like an alpha who puts up with snarling dominants and hissing cats in his pack every day of the week and has decided they’ve gotten a little too rowdy. He nods at Evan and Hoot. He’s very proud of them—and their job is done.

Reese smirks and gets a hand on both of them.

Hayden rolls his eyes and waves a questioning hand at the wall of hissing.

Reese grins. “I’m busy. Feel free to show them how a real alpha does things.”

Colin glares at Hayden. “Seriously? You run this pack with a bunch of cats and girls in charge?”

Hayden laughs. “Actually, that’s mostly true.”

Colin snarls again.

Hayden just raises an eyebrow. “I also run it with a whole bunch of wolves who would very much like to pound you into the dirt. Sadly, I don’t think I can let them.
