XI BEER AND SORCERY

There was blessed sunshine again. I breathed deeply as I walked downstairs. The front door was open; the sunlight gleamed on the red tiles of the porch, and lay in broad shafts across the hardwood floor. Through the hall stirred a warm moist breeze, very fragrant with the smell of the ground after rain. I walked out on the porch for a moment before going in to breakfast.

The house was still sleeping in the washed and polished clearness of morning. Behind the dark dome of Castle Skull across the river, motionless white clouds were piled in a sky of very pale blue. All along the deep-green crags, at whose foot the olive-green Rhine glimmered, the trees had been new-born; they were fresh trees, grown mysteriously overnight, and wind drove the sunlight over them in great rippling waves. Birds skirmished in the vines. Far down the curve of the river I heard the dim put-put of a motor-boat.
