CHAPTER 10

"I'm hoping to get into their room," Gertie admitted to Mo. "Do you know if they're here?"

Mo nodded. "I heard yelling from their room as I passed. I guess they forgot about the 'shower in five minutes' amenity that Eugene provides all his guests," she chuckled.

"Darn! I'm supposed to retrieve that picture they have of Fortune," she whispered to Mo. "Do you think they'll be at church tomorrow?"

Mo grabbed Gertie by the arm and shushed her. They turned innocent faces to the squad car, driven by Carter, that pulled into the parking lot. His look of mistrust said he suspected the worst.

Gertie dropped her brows. "Don't you even think of accusing us of wrongdoing," she yelled before Carter was even out of the car. "I simply came to invite Mo to the morning community worship, being as she's not a regular church goer. She wouldn't know about the combined service of the Baptists and Catholics being held at the park since she moved to California before the tournaments began." She turned to Mo. "It's an annual tradition to pray for a blessing on the fishing tournament, which officially kicks off at noon."

"On Sunday?" Mo didn't have to fake her astonishment. She didn't think anything short of a natural disaster would disrupt the Sunday routine in Sinful. "And they all meet in the park for one service? Doesn't that cause problems?" They fought over banana pudding, for Pete's sake! How did they ever get through a church service side by side?

Even Carter had to smile. "It did until the two churches decided to let the honorary captain of the fishing tournament lead the service."

Mo gaped. "And he prays for a blessing as well?"

"Well, he meets with Pastor Don and Father Michael beforehand. They each write a prayer and he combines the two," Gertie explained.

Mo shook her head. "And that doesn't cause a fight? Whose gets read first?"

"You don't understand, Mo. He literally combines the two. One line from each prayer is read until they are both finished. He even has two versions of it, each starting with a different church. He closes his eyes and randomly picks one to read." Carter was trying not to laugh at the confused look on Mo's face. "It has to be experienced," he told her.

"Which I was explaining, when you rudely interrupted," Gertie huffed.

"My rude interruption has a purpose," Carter replied with a glare at Gertie. "I promised Moses I'd check the tournament registration at Walter's. There is no one registered with the name Redding. Are you happy now?"

Oh, hell's bells! Juan and Carlos were outside the front door of their room having a smoke. Mo was the only one with a direct view of them, but she saw them perk up at Carter's announcement. Gertie sneezed and took a look around Carter to see what was causing Mo's dilemma.

"Of course she's not happy! Someone is going to be kidnapped, auctioned, and tortured! And you don't even care to look into it." Gertie was wound up, and Mo was grateful she was there to direct the conversation.
