As the detectives left the president's office, Elena having refused to investigate the Virgin's tears, Sandoval flipped open his notebook and said, "O.K., here's what I found out. The two girls on class trips are in France for the semester. We won't be able to get to them personally until mid-May. They both cried when they heard Fullerton was dead; neither one was even in the country when he got killed or when he got the medication from Conway's office. I'd say they're clear. Not likely they snuck back from France to kill him.
"Of the two who actually left school, I got in touch with one at a Catholic girls' college where her folks sent her because they decided it was too immoral for her here. Her father made her get tested for AIDS because he had a private detective following her and discovered that she'd been 'unchaste.' She thought her old man's terminology was hilarious. Anyway, she's clean for HIV. When I told her Fullerton was dead, she said, 'So what?'
"She also said that at St. Ursula's College, where she is now, she spends the whole day in class or in study hall, and they're locked down in the dormitory after seven. I checked it out with the nun who runs the place. This girl couldn't have got out to kill him, and the Reverend Mother's willing to take an oath on the bones of St. Ursula. So, do you think the department would send me to Duluth to get the oath? I've never been up north. You and I could go, Harry."
"I personally got better things to do than freeze my ass off at some convent in the Arctic Circle."
"Duluth's not quite that far north," said Elena, grinning. "What about the last coed?"
"Amy Marquis," Jaime replied, looking disappointed at the failure of his trip plans. He flipped a page in his notebook. They were leaving the Administration building by then and faced a stiff, cold wind.
"Man, can you believe this weather?" muttered Harry, shoving his hands into the pockets of his sport coat.
"Marquis is the only virgin in his black book. He said â this is a quote â 'It's a kick to get a virgin into bed, but from there on, it's all downhill. Makes you realize experience is all when it comes to sex.'" Jaime closed the notebook. "Not a very nice man," was his opinion.
Elena scowled. "She the one who left school for health reasons?"
Jaime nodded. "Fatigue, vomiting. That's according to her ex-roommate. Sounds bad, doesn't it?"
"Is there a date on his comments?"
"September. He met her at a get-acquainted mixer."
"Lucky her. Can AIDS hit that fast?" Elena looked around. No one knew. "I guess we could ask Dr. Conway."
"My guess is he doesn't want to talk to us anymore," said Leo dryly.
"So did you get in touch with Amy Marquis?" Elena asked Jaime.
"Not yet, and I don't want to."
She sighed. "I'll take it." Elena obtained the Albuquerque telephone number from Sandoval before her colleagues left to sign off their shifts at headquarters.
