Dr. Edward Dyer

Edward Dyer took charge. Obviously, Goodnow couldn’t take Caroline to Canada on horseback. They needed help. One abolitionist offered his horse and buggy. Dyer brought a pillowcase filled with food. Right there, standing in front of Peffer’s farmhouse, Dyer took up a collection. He asked the men to give as much as they could. In addition to Goodnow’s $8, they collected a total of $20.

Finally, Dr. Dyer wrote a letter begging all freedom-loving people between Wisconsin and Canada to help Caroline and Goodnow. At that time, doctors were well respected in the community, so a letter from a doctor would carry a lot of weight with most people. Afterward, people said the letter “would almost stir the heart of a stone.”

The gifts encouraged Goodnow and Caroline. For a moment, the wild plan to go to Canada seemed a little less impossible. Then Goodnow saw 2 men on horseback riding slowly up the hill. No! His heart beat faster. The men were Spencer and Arnold! The slave-hunting lawyers were still searching for Caroline. And there she was, with Goodnow and the abolitionists, standing in plain sight in the yard.
