‘Seems like a motive for murder,’ said Louise, watching Szopinski letting his dog off the lead again before trudging back towards the lighthouse a few minutes later.

‘Especially if you’re the owner of the campsite and you think Bishop was in on it. Remember, it was Bishop who suggested the land was split when they divorced, giving his mother the bit to the east of the lane. Harper might think he was ripped off by Webb and Bishop in that scenario.’ Dixon was typing into Google Translate on his phone. ‘The land to the west of the lane would’ve had a fraction of the value with giant “T” pylons in the next field.’

‘I wouldn’t want to camp under one, let alone live under it.’

‘Quite. And you’d be pretty pissed off if someone conned you into selling your campsite for a song on that basis, only to find the pylons are moved a couple of hundred metres away. That’s more than enough to make a huge difference.’

‘Try it without the “y” on the end,’ said Louise, tipping her head to look at his screen upside down.

‘“I might miss work”,’ said Dixon.

‘Yeah, change the “k” for a “c”.’

‘“I may lose my job”.’ Dixon slid his phone back into his jacket pocket. ‘You certainly may, Ian. Check with Jane and see who she spoke to at Energen, then we’ll go and rattle their cage, I think.’ He was kicking the sand off his shoes at the top of the steps from the beach. ‘Where are Energen?’

‘In the Energy Innovation Centre off junction 23.’

‘Then we’ll go and see how Roger’s getting on with the post mortem.’

Louise frowned at her phone. ‘No reply from Jane. I’ll try Mark.’ She dialled another number, then put her phone to her ear. ‘Yeah, hi, Mark. I was looking for Jane . . . oh, right. Yeah, I’ll tell him.’

‘Where is she?’ asked Dixon, when Louise rang off.

‘You don’t want to know.’
