CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE
âThis is what you have?â Zane demanded, sitting in Elvenâs office.
There wasnât an interrogation room in the building, and Elven didnât think it necessary to put Zane in a holding cell, though the thought had made him smile. But he was sure Zaneâs lawyer would have thrown a major fit if he did.
And Zane was no dummy. He made sure to mention his lawyer as soon as he sat down in the back of Tankâs truck.
Donald Jenner sat in the chair next to Zane right in front of Elvenâs desk. He wore a suit, which was too much for Dupray, but then again, Donald wasnât from Dupray. He held himself in a way that told anyone around that he was from the city. Which city? Well, that was up for debate, and Elven didnât even ask. Zane had connections from all his businesses outside of Dupray.
Elven would have expected Donald to be an older gentleman, what with his name being Donald. Plus, thatâs just what he was used to. Anyone worth their salt in the law field seemed to have a lot of mileage on them. Thatâs what his father had always led him to believe, anyway.
But Donald? He was younger. In fact, he looked even younger than Zane from what Elven could tell. Maybe even closer to his own age.
But he sure scowled like he was older. Because right now, listening to why Elven had brought Zane in for questioning, why he had threatened to arrest him, and why he was making a big fuss to connect Zane to the murder, he was wearing the biggest scowl Elven had ever seen.
Elven sat in his cracked leather chair behind the desk, looking at each of the men. âThatâs correct,â Elven said, finally answering Zaneâs question. âI want to know why you were offering to buy Robin Sullivanâs land and now sheâs dead.â
âSeriously, Elven, I figured I was leaning hard into you being inept with your casework, but now I see I wasnât pushing hard enough on it,â Zane said. âThis is so damn thin that youâre practically writing this out on tracing paper.â
âIâm still waiting on an explanation,â Elven said.
Zane shook his head and threw his hands in the air. âYeah, I offered Robin money for her land. She said she was going to think about itâ ââ
âThatâs not what I was told,â Elven said.
âIf youâd let me finish.â
Elven gestured for Zane to continue.
âThen she said no, she couldnât sell it to me because it wasnât enough to make it last. She wanted to put a house, or trailer, on the land and live there. I guess her rent was becoming a problem,â Zane said.
âAnd you didnât like that,â Elven said.
Zane shrugged. âI honestly didnât give a damn. Sure, it would have been more convenient if she sold it to me, but the property wasnât all that big in the first place. Itâs right next to where I was breaking ground today. I was more doing her a favor by buying it, with the added benefit that we might need the extra space.
