The Rotation and Zone Man-Down Defense

An exciting and challenging phase of lacrosse is the man-down defense. There are many different approaches to this segment of the game. A coach may go with the defensive unit on the field and simply replace certain positions, or he may use a special-unit approach where youngsters who don't have much opportunity to play are given the responsibility to defend. In this scenario, the defensive group quite often becomes highly cohesive, with the development of a significant personal pride and respect. This proactive approach has resulted many times in positive results. Whichever defensive philosophy is selected, the bottom line dictates that this phase of the game must be honored and given the appropriate respect in the practice schedule. Remember, the outcome of many games has been the result of a successful man-down defense.

One of the most basic defensive coverages applied in the man-down scheme is the rotation method. It is a very easy technique to learn for the man-down unit, but it requires an alert, anticipating mentality. All defenders must be on the same page as far as ball movement is concerned. The players must anticipate the next possible offensive option and when possible, prerotate to that position. Above all, communication is vital! Players should be barking out information about who has the ball, who is backer right and left, who has the cutters, and any change in the formation. The rotation defense can be implemented in two methods: (1) box-and-one and (2) the five-man rotation.
