Built by J L Thompson & Sons, Sunderland, for Silver Line’s eastbound round-the-world service via South Africa in 1948, the 7,242gt (10,750dwt) Silverplane and Silverbriar* were notable as the last cargo liners to have two funnels in the traditional fore and aft position, the forward funnel being a dummy. Their hulls measured 503ft oa x 65ft and incorporated a long forecastle and short poop, whilst cargo capacity amounted to 762,880cu ft (grain). A speed of sixteen knots was maintained by three sets of Parsons steam turbines developing 8,800shp and driving a single shaft through double-reduction gearing. In 1951, Silver Line withdrew from liner operations to concentrate on tramping and these two fine ships were bought by Cunard and renamed Alsatia and Andria for North Atlantic cargo service. In 1963, they were replaced by new tonnage and sold to China Union Lines of Taiwan, which employed them in its service to New York via Panama as Union Freedom and Union Faith. The latter was lost as a result of a fire in New Orleans following a collision on 6 April 1969, while the former was broken up in Kaohsiung in 1977.
