Poker
POKER, A GAME with many variations, is primarily a gambling game. It can be played with as few as two people but is best with five, six or seven. In many “schools”, it is usual for the first dealer to nominate the version to be played for a round of deals. After all the players have dealt in such a round (the deal moves clockwise around the table after every hand – the cards being shuffled after each hand), the next dealer (to the left of whoever nominated before) will choose whether to continue with a fresh round of the same or switch to something different. It is his privilege to choose for the next round. However, whatever the version, the object is always the same.
Object
This is to win money as a result of having, or being believed to have, a combination of cards which ranks higher than any combination held by a competing player. This statement holds good for all versions of the game, so on the next page we will look at the possible combinations. They all consist of, or are held within, five cards.
A hand without any combination may still be good enough to win as a result of its highest card or cards being higher than those in another hand. Aces are always high; that is, they are ranked above Kings.
At this point you may well be asking yourself, “Who wins if the hands are identical? For example, if one player has a Straight headed by the A and another has a Straight headed by the A ; or if two players each have two 10s and their other cards are also identical.” The answer lies in the betting… in brief, the winner will be the one who last raised the pot in that round of betting. Occasionally the pot may be shared, but you’ll see what I mean a little later on.

A Straight Flush
A run of five cards which are in the same suit. The highest straight flush would be one headed by an Ace (a Royal Straight).
