The Pacman Nebula
Translucent pillars of gas point toward the hot stars that power the Pacman Nebula (NGC 281). Radiation emitted by the stars illuminates the gas clouds but also continually erodes their structure. Among the huge dark clouds are compact globules of dust known as Bok globules. These are places of low-mass star formation, first described by the Dutch-American astronomer Bart Bok.
The Bubble Nebula
A cosmic bubble of titanic proportions called the Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635), six light years wide, was formed by violent winds blown out by the hot central supergiant star, several hundred thousand times more luminous than our sun.
