For the first time since I can remember, the feeling of wanting to run never surfaced, instead the thought of leaving made my chest hurt. Had I finally found a place I belonged? Was this the reason my mother had sent me here? How would she have known?

“You okay?” I turn to Red as she pulls me from my thoughts.

“Yeah! I think I am.” She kisses my cheek, and a smile spreads across her face like she understands.

“Come on, we’re going to play some pool before the party starts.” My eyes widen as I glance around. Does she not see the same as me? Men hollering and cheering as they drink beer, hugging as new men come in. Women dancing on tables, doing body shots at the bar.

“What do you mean, I thought it already did?” Red laughs behind me, shaking her head as if I haven’t got a clue.

“Trust me, you will know when it’s fucking started.” She holds my hand as we walk through the men and every one that steps in my direction Red gives them a look that has them moving back. There are two men already standing by the pool table. The one nearest to us is tall around six feet four, with a buzz haircut, and the way he stands tells me he was military. There is no denying it. It is like it lived in him.

He looks at Red before me, lifting his chin. “Storm,” he introduces himself. He is an intimidating bastard as he looks down his nose at me before turning back to the pool table.

“Rae.” He doesn’t look up and doesn’t say anything but takes his final shot. He straightens and leans on the pool stick.

“Bitch that’s got VP’s dick hard. You were meant to do my ink.” A lopsided smirk plays at his lips. Ah, he’s the one that was hugging the rum the other night.

“I’m going to get some drinks.” Red grins, and then must see the look on my face because she smiles. “You will be fine, just stay with him.” She points in Storm’s direction, which doesn’t make me feel any safer. I watch her until she disappears into the crowd. I feel a shiver crawl down my spine. It isn’t the sort that Ice gives me, and I swallow before I turn, coming face to face with the most unusual eyes I have ever seen. They are a kaleidoscope of golds and browns.

I take a step back but can’t stop the gasp that comes from me. It isn’t because he’s big, even though he’s around six-feet-five, and built like an MMA fighter. Ink trails from his neck down and covers both arms and knuckles. Dark raven hair hung like a veil, covering his face. The danger rolls off him, so thick it wraps around me like a pair of hands. This man is death. None of that’s what makes me gasp. It is what I see hidden inside his eyes. Demons that live so close to the surface, they are looking right at me.
