Chapter Twenty-Two

Faye

Agent Stiles was waiting for us when we got back to the motel. “Where have you been, ladies?”

“Shopping,” Barb said breezily. “Faye thought as long as we were in Wisconsin, she might as well pick up Packer stuff for her grandkids.”

She turned to me. “What did you buy?”

As I hesitated, unwilling to lie, Barb said, “We didn’t find just the thing, but we heard there’s a cheese shop north of here, near Oconto. We’ll stop there on the way home, once we know Retta is okay.”

Now, Barb isn’t a great liar either, but she managed to deflect without deceiving. There might well be a great cheese shop in Oconto. We just had no idea if there was or where it might be.

Stiles dropped the subject. “Have you heard from your sister again?”

“No.” We spoke together, but Barb went on. “But we do have a question for you. Are you working with a partner?”

Her eyes tightened. “No. Why do you ask?”

“We heard through the grapevine about a man asking questions at the store. He told them he might go to the police with information he has about Lydia’s granddaughter.”

That made Stiles take note. “Which grapevine did you hear it on?”

Barb put on her best lawyer manner. “I’m afraid I can’t reveal the source of the information.”

She rolled her eyes. “What can you tell me about this man?”

“Medium height and build, mid-thirties, dark hair done up in a knot, lots of white teeth, big voice.”

That interested her. “Sounds like you saw him.”

“What difference does it make?”

Stiles sighed. “I’m trying to keep you ladies safe. I’ll look into this, but you need to stop interfering. Please.”

“I’m sure you’re very capable.” Again Barb didn’t lie, but she didn’t say we’d stop looking for Retta either. Why would we sit on our hands when our sister was in trouble?

When Stiles left I checked my phone, which had signaled several text messages. All were from Wanda. All claimed it was “critacal” we talk. I deleted them and went back to trying to find out more about Critterz helper Max and the elusive Kylie, who didn’t seem to live anywhere.
