Chapter Fourteen
âNo,â Garret said after I finished the story of what had happened. âYouâre wrong.â
âThe physical description fits,â I objected, âAnd we both know Lydia was gunning for action. She knew you would never consent to working as a group and decided to go renegade.â
âI would haveââ he started.
âYou lied to her about the lockpick,â I shot. âDonât try to tell me you were willing to budge.â
The van fell silent, save for the whoosh of highway traffic. Weâd made it free and nobody had followed us. The illusion over Mariahâs minivan ensured the police couldnât trace it back to her. As far as I knew, we were in the clear, but that was cold comfort.
The argument with Garret had died, but I held onto my anger. âEmma. Question for you.â
âYuh-huh?â she asked.
âWhy the hell did you set a real fire?â I demanded. âYou could have gotten someone killed.â
âThe factoryâs main output is pretty much tinder, and theyâve got a great suppression system. There were too many folks chin-wagging around the fire alarm. I couldnât have pulled it without being seen.â She shrugged. âWe were in a rush. I improvised.â
âAnd you didnât worry about safety? About hurting the employees?â
âScrew âem,â Mariah called back. âThe whole company is trash. Even if we didnât get what we came for, Iâm glad we bloodied their nose on the way out.â
Emma looked me in the eye and nodded. âWhat she said.â
âThereâs a problem with your theory,â Garret said. âLydia wouldnât hurt anyone.â
He was right, but the hole didnât sink my theoryâs ship. âI donât know. I didnât get a chance to ask what happened to Roger. Maybe he attacked her and Lydia had to defend herself. Maybe Regina was just looking for an excuse to pin us with more blame. I couldnât tell you one way or another.â
He stopped arguing. Whether he knew he was wrong, or just lacked the energy to fight, he sat back in the van.
âHave you tried to find her with a spell?â Ben asked. âSome kind of tracking evocation?â
âYes,â Garret said.
âWhat did you do? Maybeââ
âIâve tried everything,â Garret snapped. âIâve tried with her blood, her hair. Iâve tried looking for the trace energy of her curse. Iâm not some learner still getting my license.â
âAnything I could assist with?â Ben offered, unphased by the barbs. âAdd an extra voice to the spell and amplify it?â
âMaybe.â If I had a correct reading of his face, Garret had his doubts, but Benâs offer of straws to grasp gave him a glimmer of hope. âThe aura of her curse would be the hardest to conceal. We can try casting a wider net if Iâve got your help. Youâve practiced group rituals?â
âOne of the first things we did in class,â Ben confirmed. âIâm no master, but I can pitch in.â
âOkay.â
Mariah turned on her blinker and took the exit to Garretâs property. âIâm going home after this,â she said. âI canât help with the research, and Lydiaâs going to need another potion once we get her back.
