Wealth & Want

“I don’t know the steps.” My lavender dress swished as I shifted my weight from one foot to the other, nervously playing with a strand of my hair. “You bewitched me last time we danced. My lack of experience will only lead to us both being embarrassed.”

I glanced around the room, taking in the ornate decorations and courtiers decked out in their finest finery. This was the last court event before we headed out to hunt for the elusive white stag.

All eyes were on us—we were the focus of attention.

Elara and Casimir watched us intently, their faces unreadable.

“Bewitched you?” Azair laughed, a deep and melodic sound that echoed in the still room. “My dear Summer Queen, I did no such thing.”

“What did you call the music, the seasons fading, the portal of time?” I asked, my toes tapping to the rhythm of an unseen melody. “The only way to dance that pattern is with a spell.”

He stepped closer, his robe sweeping across the marble floor. “It was a song of enchantment, designed to pull you into my world. And all I did was give you my hand.” He paused, and his deep golden eyes met mine with an intensity that made me shiver. “And trust you to follow it. To bewitch you, Summer Queen, I need no spell.”

The sound of drums echoed through my bones, vibrating with energy. It was a deep, primal sound that came from everywhere and nowhere at once.

Guttural voices followed, chanting a triumphant chorus.

“That’s not what I mean,” I said, my voice almost lost beneath the music. “I’m talking about leading. You may have the steps, but I still don’t know how to follow them.”

Azair moved around me in a slow circle, not touching, but still somehow keeping me in the center of his orbit.

“There’s no reason for fear or embarrassment,” he breathed, his voice a low murmur. “The rhythm of the music is in our veins. I am here to teach you, to guide you, and to make sure that by the end of the night, you ache for more.”

His hand traced the dip of my spine, caging me in with his body.

My throat went dry, and I had to fight the urge to lean into his touch. “But I don’t know—”

He smiled knowingly as he spun me around, arching his body around mine until my back was pressed against him.

He took my hand in his as his hips moved against mine in a slow, rhythmic motion.

The drums beat louder and faster, echoing through my veins and setting my body alight.

Mewling voices filled the air, hushed and urgent as couples moved in perfect synchronicity around us.

Their bodies draped like silk over one another, twining together in feverish passion. Wealthy fabrics of gold and scarlet clung to them like a second skin, highlighting every curve and dip.

Sharp cries pierced through the room, rising in pitch as their movements grew more frenzied. Bodies swayed, shifting with the melody of drums and strings that echoed around the walls.
