Michael’s ears twitched and he sat up, careful not to move Marcus. He looked so cute, sleeping with his hand tucked under his cheek. Michael stood and tucked the covers tightly around him, keeping the cold out, and walked out of their room from behind the curtain, pulling it closed behind him. A quick scan of the area had him hurrying to catch up with Esteban, who was headed toward the entrance.

Esteban must have sensed his approach, because he turned his head and nodded before motioning for Michael to follow him. They stopped outside the cave’s entrance. Each took a deep breath. The night air was cool and a slight breeze was blowing from the south.

“Did you find anything out during your recon of the area?” Esteban asked. “During the day things can be found that hide at night.”

“The witches are still arriving in that old town and whatever portal they had been trying to open is now open. A few arrived that way. Whatever they are up to can’t be good for the world.”

“It worries me that they are so close to my nest. I am unable to move my females with young. I know they followed you out of that town. Do you think they know where we reside?” Esteban rubbed the back of his neck and stared out across the desert.

Michael shook his head. “They haven’t ventured out other than to chase Marcus and me. I overheard some of them talking about finding a resting place. Maybe they intend to bring the town back to life, a witch town.”

“I hope not. My brood and I would lose this place as a nest and it’s one of the best we have ever found. With the expansion of humans, it’s becoming harder to find remote areas.”

“Have you ever tried the forest?” Michael asked.

“Shifters do not look kindly on vampires moving into their territories.” Esteban waved his hand. “But that is a worry for another day. One after my females have given birth and we are mobile again.”

“May the births be blessed by the goddess.” Michael turned away from the view of the desert and looked at Esteban. “Will any of your brood be heading into any towns this night?”

“With so many younglings and young on the way, we have to go every night.”

“How do you keep from being found out? From what I remember, humans do not take kindly when there’s an increase in deaths.”

“We don’t kill to eat anymore. Centuries ago my father was able to find a way for us to survive without killing. So now we plant memories of drinking and fun times in the minds of those we have taken blood, and many develop the signs of a hangover the day after.”

“I am glad to hear you don’t kill. It would put me in a very difficult position. As guardians we understood that to feed you must drink blood, but we always hoped the killing would become unnecessary. I can remember it came up in discussion many times when I was a young gargoyle at court.
