Chapter eighteen
âIâm going to need to get better at sword fighting too,â I said to Vanessa, âI almost didnât make it back there.â
I hadnât really had time to consider it with everything else going on, but I had killed a man.
That was not something Iâd ever intended to do, or ever thought I would do in my entire life, but here I was, having killed another human being in a burst of adrenaline.
Strangely enough, I didnât feel any sort of remorse or guilt about it though, as Iâd thought I might.
Maybe it was because I knew how bad of a guy he was, and then I was really only doing it out of self-defense.
Vanessaâs bright eyes lit up. âCan you teach me? What you did out there was amazing.â
I nodded as I got back up to my feet and wiped my hands on my pants. âSure, I can show you the basics. I'm so glad now my dad put me in fencing for all those years that he did.â
I grabbed the sword and then came back over to Vanessa, who was doing some excited jumping at the thought of being able to learn to sword fight.
I thought it was important that she at least learned the basics, considering the fact that this was a very violent world and I wanted her to be able to defend herself if she absolutely had to.
I picked up the sword and passed it between my hands, feeling the weight of the heavy metal a moment before handing it over to her.
âOkay, firstâI want you to see which hand it feels more natural in. It will probably be your dominant hand, but letâs just see.â
Vanessa gave a couple of chops with her left hand, and then switched over to her right and did the same.
I could tell that the motion was a lot more fluid coming from her right hand, so we decided to stick with that one.
I got up close to her, feeling her warm breath on my cheek as I shifted her body into position, sliding her front leg out a little bit and giving her back leg space as well to create a stable base for her.
Vanessa smirked.
âDid you only say yes to teaching me so you could get this close?â she said.
âAgain, no comment.â
I showed her how to hold the sword out in front of her while keeping her foot in line.
Then I taught her the parry move.
I showed her how to hold the blade and deflect a sword strike that was aimed towards your chest or legs, and how to slap it away before lunging forward to give a return strike.
I had to admit, it was awesome.
Just getting to be this close to her, our skin on skin contact making my heart beat faster as I positioned her and showed her how to do the things I was trying to instruct.
She was a quick learner, too.
Once sheâd gotten the instructions for me, I had her practice a few times on the side of the mattress.
