Silently, he carries me upstairs, crawls in bed and holds me until his breathing deepens and the scowl on his face softens into restful sleep. The tracks of his tears, long dried on his face, shimmer in the moonlight.

“I want to be your Belle,” I whisper into the dark, not believing it’s possible, or knowing everything that means to him, but wanting it all the same.

MORNING HITS LIKE A TON OF bricks. Groggy, I sit up, legs over the edge of the bed, my head in my hands. If I didn’t know the reason for my pounding headache, I’d think I went on a bender last night. An emotional hangover is just as bad. Maybe worse.

I have kids, my conscience reminds me.

Cher. I swing around only to freeze at the sight of her side of the bed empty and made up like she didn’t sleep with me last night.

She did, didn’t she?

“Fuck.” I scrub my face and head for the bathroom. Thank God it’s Sunday. A day to get my life in order before Monday comes knocking.

After a quick shower, I’m rejuvenated and determined to track down one missing Plum. She could be downstairs, but I’m fairly certain she ran, hard, and fast. My baggage a little too much for her. Maybe. I intend on finding out.

In the car, I call Rowdy.

“Morning, Cap.” Sounds like I just woke him.

“Sorry if I woke you.”

“No, just dragging a little. That damn chocolate cake.” He yawns.

I chuckle and fight the need to yawn too. “Yeah, it was the cake that got you and not the whisky… or the emotions.”

“You okay?” The fact he can even ask me that after everything he’s found out, points to the kind-hearted man he is.

He’s mine. Fuck. It hits me all over again.

How’d I get so lucky? Vera and Barrett did me wrong by not telling me, but still, I’m blessed to have him now.

“I’m good. I was wondering if you were free for, say, dinner or something.”

“Sure.” Not even a moment’s hesitation. “I’m taking Reese to my place this morning. You want to come for dinner, around sixish?”

“Sounds perfect.”

“Reese will be there.”

I assumed so. “Sounds even better.” I’ve nothing to hide, other than my growing attraction and frustration with her mother. “See you soon.”

“Yep. Bye.”

I swing by for coffee and food before traipsing up to Cher’s door, pounding like the damn door did me wrong.

Pounding on her door is becoming a habit.

The startle on her face has me slowing my roll, but not the censure in my tone. “You left. You snuck out.”

She smiles. She fucking smiles, and damn if my heart doesn’t do a happy dance.

“You’re mad.” She’s still fucking smiling. She’s happy about that?

“Yeah, Plum. I liked the idea of waking up with you in my arms.”

Her smile grows into a full-blown toothy grin. Christ Almighty, my heart.

“Do you want to come in?” she asks as she steps back.

I want to do a hell of a lot more than that, but it’s a start. “Yes, please.
