“Smile,” Ace growls, snarling under his heavy exhale.

He pinches my arm too tightly, holding me into his side while he does as he promised to do. I’m not allowed to leave his vicinity, Isaac coming in just steps behind us while we walk into this grand venue that I’ve never seen before. It’s a large building downtown, adorned with gold streamers and waiters that look more like butlers in tuxedos.

The crowd inside cheers when they see us together. My dress is long and ivory, an embarrassing tip to the white wedding we’ll be having soon. I’m still a virgin, which is everyone’s concern at this party. Ace greets his vast guest list with smiles and firm handshakes.

His first attempt at the house to introduce me to everyone failed miserably with the takeover and attempted drugging. Whoever came by and shot at the crowd managed to get a few hits in, but nothing too tragic had occurred. They’re obviously not taking the same precautions as before. This event is lined with security and large men bearing large guns.

I reach for the waiter’s tray, something gold catching my eye on his sleeve. He smiles and ducks out of the way, leaving me with a bubbly champagne. My stomach turns while I set the glass down, and Ace takes it from my hands instantly and throws the liquid down his throat.

The eerie thrill of this party is the first thing I notice. These people are oblivious to the odd feeling that lingers through their joy. I cling to my dress, trying to walk straight with my wounded leg and short, stubby heel of a shoe. Ace pushes me to sit in a chair while he greets his father, with Isaac standing behind me, his hands nearing my shoulders as if to grab me at any moment and hurl me to the floor.

“Hello, Eliza,” Russo says, his eyes trailing my plunging neckline and bedazzled, thin waist. “You’re a vision in white, dear. Won’t be long before you get to wear the real deal.”

“Not for long,” Ace snorts, partially drunk in the short amount of time we’ve been here. “We have to make the ceremony short, that way I can have this bunny to myself.”

Russo tips his glass to such a crude remark. “To many grandchildren,” he says.

Ace staggers towards the bar nearby, leaving Russo to perch in the chair beside mine. I hardly give him the time of day, looking elsewhere when I feel his frail hand brush my knee. I hate looking at him, but I do so anyway, noticing the hollows where his eyes recede into their sockets and the dark circles that curse his mature skin. He looks like death in a tuxedo, the sight appalling and uncomfortable to my tired mind.

“I know this isn’t your first choice in life, Eliza Grant,” he whispers, his thin, dry lips in a flat grin. “But you will be giving this family the future it needs to survive. I know you probably don’t like me, either, but that’s okay.
