She woke to the feel of his lips on her nape. She had rolled onto her stomach. “Is it morning yet?”

“Not yet. Your hair is still damp.”

“No, don’t go,” she murmured when she felt the bed shift.

He placed a kiss on the back of her bare shoulder. “Be right back.”

She smiled when she felt the warmth of the blow-dryer as he moved it over her braids. She was relaxed, snuggled against the pillow. When he was done, she thanked him.

“You are welcome, but there is no need, I enjoy spoiling you.”

She turned her head toward him. “Can’t sleep?”

“I slept for a few hours. But I’m an early riser. This morning I’ve been watching you and thinking.”

“About?” she prompted.

“We’re both guilty of letting the past influence the present. I was only a kid when my brother’s first wife, Evie, taught me a hard lesson about love and relationships. I was young but it stuck. Relationships can be complicated.”

“Really?” Laura teased, hoping to lighten the mood. “Let’s make a pact. Not to take this thing between us seriously. We’re having fun. Why not just enjoy the time we have? No worries about the future. Okay?”

“You didn’t feel that way last night,” he remarked.

“I know. And I was wrong. Come on, Wil. We only have two weeks, and then I’m going home, back to my real world. Besides, we both know you aren’t interested in commitment, marriage, or babies. And I certainly don’t want to fall for an international player who’s busy leaving a trail of broken hearts behind.” Laughing, she poked him in his ribs, saying, “Why not forget the rest of the world and go with the flow? Enjoy our island fling?”

Chuckling, he tightened his arms around her and brushed his lips against hers. “Island fling, hmm,” he crooned in her ear. Then he warned, “It sounds good. But reality can sneak up and smack you upside the head if you are not careful.”

He went on to tell her how Gordan met Evie while in college and they married quickly. “The marriage proved to be a mistake. Evie not only lied to my brother’s face while cheating behind his back, but she tried to force me to keep quiet and help her conceal other men. My brother was working day and night to build the company and secure our future. Her scheme backfired when she badly underestimated my loyalty and keen sense of right and wrong. I was young but nobody’s fool. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, telling Gordan the truth.”

“She expected you to keep her secret?”

“My nephew was only a baby. I watched him while she was out prowling. For a short time I kept quiet because I couldn’t stand to see my brother hurt. But she got too bold, brought some guy into our home. That’s when I realized I had no choice. I had to tell.”

“Wow!” Laura hugged him, and kissed his throat. “That’s terrible. I’m so sorry.”

“The experience made it hard for me to trust.
