Chapter 15

Jonas barely held on for the ride or got his door shut, as Taylor sped down the highway well over the speed limit. She turned onto the road that led to her territory, and Jonas knew he had to think fast.

“Taylor, you need to think rationally about this.”

She shook her head, and it was a miracle she was able to drive as well as she did with that wild expression in her eyes.

“If you go storming back home looking like that, and if what those guys said was true, you could give everything away.”

“I’m not taking the risk. I want her back. I need her back.”

“I do, too, but—”

“You’re not acting like it!” Taylor slammed her hand onto the steering wheel, turning that enraged expression onto him before looking back at the road. “We left her there, and she might be in trouble!”

“Of course I do! I would have cared a long time ago if you’d bothered to tell me she existed!” It just came out. He still had anger and hurt about it, but should have kept it inside. The swell of moisture in Taylor’s eyes showed that it was too much to think about past mistakes while frantically trying to get to Meg right then.

He focused, bringing calm back into himself. He was no good to anyone, not even Taylor or Meg if he couldn’t keep his head. One of them had to. He put his hand onto Taylor’s. “Baby, pull over. Please. We’ve got maybe one chance at this.”

Her hand shook. He felt the tickle of hairs under his fingers and palm as she struggled to keep her inner bear in check. She let out a shaky breath before slowing the truck down and guiding it over to the side of the road.

She wouldn’t stop trembling. He’d never seen her like this before, and it stunned him. And he wanted to ease her out of that pain. Everything inside him drew him to her. She was a magnet, and he was stuck in her pull. Almost two years away and he’d thought he was over her. He thought there was nothing left between them and now he couldn’t yank himself away from her even if he wanted to.

“Baby, nothing is going to happen to Meg.”

“Then we need to get home before something does happen.”

“I know, and we will, but if what those men said was true and you rush in there looking ready for a fight, it will put them on the defensive and cause them to act. You need to stay calm. All right? If Andrew has anything to do with this—”

“You think he’s involved?”

Shit. “No, not necessarily, but maybe he’s close to someone who is. The point is that you can’t give us away to anyone when we get back. All right? Not yet. Wait until you have Meg safely in your arms and then, when you’re out of there, and at a safe distance, the police can get involved and start asking questions.”

She looked at him.
