Tension headaches—and some migraines—may resolve with over-the-counter remedies like ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Other, stronger medications are prescribed for most migraines and for cluster headaches. Triptans, for instance, may be prescribed for migraine because they block pain pathways to the brain. When other medications don’t work, opioids may be prescribed; however, because of their strength and addictive quality the American Headache Society does not recommend them. All pharmaceuticals may have side effects, especially for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. For that reason, a 2017 issue of the journal Medical Clinics of North America reports that 82 percent of people with migraines seek alternative options. The American Academy of Neurology cites adequate sleep and hydration, acupuncture, and dietary supplements such as magnesium and vitamin B2 as potential migraine preventers. Because stress is considered the primary trigger for migraine, relaxation therapy is key: Massage, yoga, meditation, or a relaxing soak could help.
