COMPETITION STANDARDS

In competition, dogs jump from a dock that is exactly 40 feet long and 24 inches above the pool. Dogs take a running start or jump from the end of the dock. The distances are measured from the edge of the dock to the point where the base of the dog’s tail lands in the water. There are two judges on either side of the pool and a steward on the dock, who signals the teams when they are on deck and when it’s clear for them to begin.

At national DockDogs events, the jumps are measured using video cameras equipped with digital measurement software that was developed by ESPN for the Olympics. At local club events, the jumps are measured by sight by two certified judges, who estimate to the nearest inch.

In addition to the Big Air distance events, there is the Extreme Vertical event, in which dogs try to grab or knock off a bumper that hangs in the air from an extender at least eight feet from the dock. There are two divisions: one for novices with the bumper starting at five feet above the water and an advanced one with the bumper starting at six feet.
