Chapter Twelve

“OH, CHRISTY, YOUR MOTHER told me about the carousel. I’m so sorry,” Linda said and hugged her. “Some people have no respect for other people’s property. If there’s anything I can do to help, please let me know. I can paint a little, and I would be happy to help out.”

Christy smiled. “That’s sweet of you to offer, Linda. I’ll let Devon know.”

Mom poured warm milk chocolate fudge into a pan to set up, then got the smaller pan of orange fudge to swirl into it from the stovetop. “I feel awful about what happened to the carousel. Your father and I would love to help Devon put it back in working order, Christy.”

Tears came to Christy’s eyes. “Thanks, Mom. That’s sweet of you. I just feel so terrible about what happened. Poor Devon is brokenhearted, and that makes me feel even worse. I hope Ethan figures out who did it, but that security tape we watched isn’t going to help.”

I smoothed the fudge in the pan for Mom. “Ethan asked the other shops in the area if they had caught anything on their security cameras, but no one had a clear shot of the perpetrator or what he was doing.”

“That’s a shame,” Linda said, picking up an order from the printer. “Maybe Devon should put some cameras on the carousel in case they try it again. It seems like you’ve got to have cameras on your property to keep people from destroying things these days.” She shook her head.

“That’s the truth,” Christy said.

I gently swirled the orange fudge into the chocolate before it cooled and set up. “I love this flavor of fudge.”

“Me too,” Mom said. “I’ll need to come up with something new for Christmas, too.”

Amy came to the kitchen doorway. She was one of the temporary employees Mom had hired. “It’s lunchtime. Should I go now?”

I nodded. “I’ll be right out front to take over.”

“Great, thanks.” She went back out front, and I finished with the fudge.

“I’ll be out front if you need me.”

There were only two customers in the shop, and they were busy looking over the candy. We had spent yesterday in what felt like a state of shock after the carousel had been vandalized and today it just felt like a weight of sadness had dropped on us. Devon and Christy had been so excited about the carousel, and I had been, too. I loved the idea that I could ride it anytime I wanted, and I loved the fact that Devon had bought his own business. Pumpkin Hollow businesses were mainly owned and operated by town residents, and that was one of the things that made this town so special. We believed in this town and in what we had built here.

“See you later, Amy.”

“See you.”

Angela Karris entered the store, grinning. “Well, hello, Mia! I told you I was going to stop in and get some of that orange chocolate fudge. What did you say your mother called it?”

I smiled “Hello, Angela. She named it Halloween fudge.
