Here’s a Secret . . .

I spent a lot of time during my teen years complaining to my mom. My allowance wasn’t big enough. She didn’t get the cereal I wanted. I had too many chores. Blah, blah, blah.

Sadly my mom died not long ago. It felt like I’d been kicked in the stomach. When I look back, the things I complained about seemed pretty pointless. I regretted the time I wasted complaining. The moments I treasured were laughing with Mom when she tried to teach me to ice-skate (and both of us falling down more than we stood up). Or the times we made cookie dough before watching a movie together, or took walks along Trickle Lake in the fall and talked about anything and everything.

Since she passed away, I have a different perspective. These moments in life don’t last forever—so we need to appreciate the times we have with our families, pets, and friends. Instead of seeing what’s lacking, let’s open our eyes to the many gifts we’ve been given.

Living a life of gratitude is simply living a life with a great attitude. It’s noticing the good over the not-so-good, remembering to appreciate those around us, and stopping to give God thanks for the blessings He gives us every day.
