Cardinal’s distinctive approach is remarkably captured in his first significant work, Saint Mary’s church in Red Deer (1968), a building that has since achieved iconic status in Canada. Engaging in a comprehensive design process with the client, Father Werner Merx, Cardinal produced a complex curvilinear structure that recalls the landscapes of the prairies and forests, while referencing the work of Francesco Borromini, Antoni Gaudí, and Le Corbusier. FIG 11 The project was also an early application of his pioneering use of computer-aided design and construction management, in this case used to make structural calculations for the roof.

After moving his office to Edmonton in the late 1960s, Cardinal became more engaged with his Indigenous heritage. He was also awarded a number of significant public commissions in Alberta, most notably the Grande Prairie Regional College (1976). FIGS 12–15 In this project, he translated his distinctive language of curvilinear forms, which he had so convincingly presented in his Red Deer church, to a larger scale, aided by his comprehensive approach to program analysis and diagramming. The project also entailed designing a range of both significant and subsidiary spaces. The college theater remains one of Cardinal’s most striking interiors, showcasing his ability to create a space that is both sculptural and functional.10 Other key projects from this period include the Ponoka Provincial Building (1977) and St. Albert Place (1984).
