It takes a half an hour, but you finally convince Mrs. Baxter to let Nathan go to the hospital. You help carry him out to your Model T.

You look over at Nathan from time to time as you drive down the mountain. He’s probably twenty years old at most. He might be even younger. It seems odd that the flu has taken such a hold of him. In past flu seasons, it’s always the elderly that suffer the most.

You adjust the mask on your face and lean against your car door and its open window.

You told Mrs. Baxter you were headed to the hospital. But you know that it’s pointless. The newspaper has been reporting that the hospital is full for some time. However, the next best thing has opened on Woodfin Street. The American Red Cross has converted a high school into an emergency ward. So, that’s where you take Nathan.
