I don’t know whether I was laughing, or whether I was crying. I had tears in my eyes; I was grinning like an idiot.

He’d done this for me. He’d given up work just so he could fix my ceiling, just because he thought it was something he should do for me.

“What are you doing to me, Wane?” I asked into the quiet, and then looked down at the letter again, with hot tears still falling down my cheeks. A tiny laugh broke out of me when I saw the doodle beneath his signature, and how he’d added – tried to, at least – aviators over the smiley face to make him look smug.

I folded the letter and placed it on the counter, and then grabbed Snow from his basket so I could nuzzle my face against his soft white fur. “Wane is going to be our demise, isn’t he?” I asked him, to which he sniffed my ear and licked my lobe.

With a smile, I pulled back and kissed his nose, walked over to my apartment door, and shut it. I crouched to grab my phone from the floor, and then settled on my couch. I placed Snow on my lap, where he immediately curled up into a ball and went to sleep. I chuckled at him, and then pulled up Wane’s number on my contact list before pressing call. The line went on and the ringing began, and I glanced at the repaired ceiling once as I waited, with a pounding heart, for him to pick up the phone.
