“Like some other people on the autism spectrum, I can be very sensitive to feelings from my senses such as strong smells and loud noises. In my case, I have a problem with the stiffness of new clothes and especially new shoes. When I get new clothes, they need to be washed lots of times before I can wear them. And they have to have no lumpy buttons or scratchy zips. School uniform used to be a big problem for me, but I have got used to it now.

Brushing my teeth has always been hard for me. I still use children’s toothpaste because it’s not so minty, and I use an electric toothbrush because it’s not so scratchy in my mouth.

School can be a very noisy and smelly place for me. Sometimes that means I have real trouble paying attention in class. Shopping centres are bad for that too. And airports are even worse. I have to listen to my iPod in an airport and when we go on holiday we get there really early so it’s not so busy.”
