CHAPTER 9

“I know. One more minute.” I tossed the blanket over my head to make Fifi stop sniffing my ear to wake me up. She needed to go potty. The sun filtered through the tiny spaces between the campervan blinds in the small bedroom.

Fifi yipped a few times, telling me she didn’t have another minute to wait.

“Okay, fine.” I exhaled a large sigh and knocked the covers back from my warm bed. I pushed myself up to sit on the edge of the bed, where I slipped my feet into my slippers. “Ouch.” I groaned when I stood up.

My feet were killing me from dancing half the night away. I’d moved my body in ways it had not been moved since I was living in New York City, where I’d spent a lot of nights dancing in bars after long flights when I was a flight attendant.

I laughed, recalling a few of those nights. They felt like a lifetime ago.

I grabbed my sweatshirt off the top of the small dresser and tugged it over my head. Fifi was dancing at the door in anticipation of me unlocking it and opening it for her to dart out on her own for her to sniff and run around.

My phone rang. Immediately, I looked down to see who was calling so early.

“Hello?” I answered and waited for the automated prison message to tell me I had to hit the buttons to accept the call from Lester Hager so they could charge my credit card. On a landline phone, the collect call could be charged to your phone company, but since I had a cell phone, I had to give my credit card to accept the call.

“Lester? Are you okay?” Every time a call came through from the prison, I felt sick.

“I’m doing okay.” He sounded weak. “I wanted to know if you’ve been able to talk any sense into Betts?”

“Lester.” Softly, his name came out. The coffee had already brewed thanks to the daily timer, and I poured a cup so I could sit down on the couch. Leaves tumbled across the road and danced around each other in front of my camper. “You and I both know Betts has a mind of her own. She wants to see you, and I don’t blame her.”

I hit the speaker button and sat the phone on the arm of the couch so I could wrap my cold hands around the mug. The cozy autumn days and crisp fall nights were wonderful, but the chilly mornings called for a hot cup of coffee and an extra blanket on the bed at night.

“I told you I can’t let her see me like this. I’d much rather just pass away and leave her with the memory she has of me healthy. Maybe not the guy she married.” There was regret in his voice. “But the man who didn’t look sick.”

“Lester, you have to understand you’re asking a big ask from me.” I had tried to reason with him, but he was as hardheaded as she was.
