Chapter Ten

I’d like to go on record that this is a very bad idea. This is the classic horror movie scene where everyone starts to make horrible decisions, and then almost everyone ends up dead.

I couldn’t argue with Leo’s sentiment. I even tried to come up with something to counter his words, but I was at a complete loss.

“What do you mean that Maggie has gone missing?”

The question, which had literally been asked four times by this point, had come from Brian. He was back in the chair that he’d originally claimed, though he didn’t seem so relaxed now. He was staring at Luanne as if she’d grown two heads.

She, in turn, was glaring at all of us as if we were incapable of understanding basic math.

Jason ignored both of them as he rummaged through one of the desk drawers on a mission that I was sure had to do with his sister.

“I’m going back out there to find her.”

We’re all going to be dead before the good ol’ sheriff can send reinforcements.

“I don’t understand how Maggie could have gone missing when she was literally standing right next to you.”

The statement and somewhat accusatory tone came from Newt, who no longer seemed to want to hold back on the allegations. Janice was patting his hand in what could only be seen as her way to calm him down, but he’d clearly had the last straw yanked out from under him.

I don’t believe that I’d ever seen him agitated like this before.

That’s not agitation. That’s unadulterated fear of the unknown, Raven. It happens to the best of us.

“She was a few steps behind us, and then she was just…” Luanne shook her head back and forth, as if she couldn’t believe what had happened herself. “Were all of you here the whole time? Did anyone of you leave this cabin?”

It’s a good thing that she doesn’t know about me. She’d be pointing the finger my way, and no one would believe that I have memory issues. They’d put me behind bars and throw away the key. Hey, Raven. Do me a favor. Don’t even bring up the fact that you supposedly left me in the cabin. I’d rather not call attention to myself in this heated moment of distrust, you know?

“No. No one left the cabin,” Heidi replied matter-of-factly. She was now standing, along with Newt and Janice, though they remained close to their makeshift sleeping areas. “We were all accounted for, Luanne. It was only you and Jason who were out there with Maggie.”

“Are you suggesting that—”

I wasn’t as caught off guard as the rest of them when Jason slammed the flashlight against the desk in frustration, cutting off Luanne’s indignant question. I’d been watching him closely, though. His response seemed to have more to do with his fear for his sister than anything else. Luanne and Jason had been the ones with Maggie, and the rest of us had all been together at the main cabin.

I could understand why Heidi had pointed out that little tidbit.
