Chapter Nine

“It is so good to see you,” Lana said to the handsome blond man. He circled his arm around her waist and pulled her in for another kiss.

“I’ve missed you, darling,” he said to Lana. Even over the noise of the club, Patricia could hear that he spoke in an English accent.

“I’ve been so busy with work,” said Lana. “I’ve been going crazy missing you.”

“I understand,” he replied. He ran a hand through his stylish haircut as he watched Lana. “I just wish you didn’t have to work so hard these days. Your stupid boss works you too hard.”

Patricia perked up her ears when she heard this. So the young DJ knew about Jeff Jones. Was there going to be some kind of confrontation? She hoped Brian was ready to step in, if that happened. Yet the young man seemed oddly calm when he mentioned Lana’s boss. Patricia was confused.

“He’s not stupid. And you know I would spend all my time with you if I could,” Lana replied. “Everything has been a mess since Peter’s death.”

“Let me get you a drink.” The young man got the bartender’s eye and ordered two gin and tonics. He handed one to Lana.

“To Peter,” he said, raising his glass. Lana seemed to get choked up. The young man lowered his drink and put his arms around Lana. Lana rested her head on his shoulder. She seemed to be crying.

“I have to stop this,” said Lana, taking a deep breath after a while.

“It’s okay,” said the man gently. “I’m here for you, love.”

“It just doesn’t seem fair,” said Lana. “I wait all day to see you and we end up talking about Peter again.”

“It’s okay, Lana. I know how much he meant to you,” the man replied.

“He really did,” said Lana. “I don’t know where I would be without him.”

“He saw in you exactly what I do,” came the response. “He knew how good you are at your job, and that you would be even better when he helped you get a new job with bigger responsibilities. He believed in you.”

“Yes, he did,” Lana responded, wiping her eyes. “I was just talking to Jim and Saul at the other club. Jim wanted to talk to me about something.”

“Really? What did he want?”

“Well, he told me I could come and work for him if I wanted to,” said Lana.

“That is fantastic, babe. Why didn’t you tell me when you got here? This is huge news. You don’t have to work for that other Jeff anymore. We should celebrate!” At the excitement in the young man’s voice, Lana jumped off her barstool and hugged him. That other Jeff? What on earth, wondered Patricia. As Patricia watched, Lana gave him another big kiss.

“I love you so much. Let’s go dance before your DJ set starts,” Lana said. “Will you let me sit in the booth with you tonight?”

“Only if you answer me one question. Am I your favorite Jeff?” teased the handsome blond, leaning close to her.

“You’re the only Jeff that matters,” Lana replied with a smile.
