CHAPTER FIFTEEN

When he’d started all of this, it had been with a clear intention in mind. He had a message to send, a statement to make, and it would require the murder of several people—as many as it took, honestly.

But now… well, now he had to be honest with himself. Now he was also doing it because it was much more enjoyable than he’d anticipated. Now, he’d developed a taste for what he was doing—for murder. He liked to think that he would not be able to murder for the sake of murder. What he was doing had a purpose behind it. It was something he felt he’d been called to do.

It was just an added bonus that he was coming to enjoy it. And apparently, he was very good at it. No one was on to him yet. In fact, he was pretty sure the cops and the FBI agents he’d spotted lurking about had no idea who he was… or that he was even in the area.

He sat outside of his cabin and thought about what would come next. The cabin wasn’t his—it was one he’s rented out online. He had it for two weeks. And in a few days, when the rental agreement was up on this one, he had another place already lined up just eight miles down the road. He had his lists—the ones these miserable people had essentially filled out for him. He knew who belonged here and who did not. And though it might take a while, he had no doubt that he could clean Boone Junction out completely before everything was said and done. It was only a matter of time.

From the rocking chair on the porch of the cabin rental, he gazed up to the sky, tracing the jagged edges of the tree line along the night with his eyes. He loved this place; he knew it deserved better than the filth that was occupying it now.

He breathed in the crisp night air, wishing he could strike again already.

But he knew these people and their schedules. Plus, though he didn’t want to admit it, he was a bit tired. And he knew he had to be well-rested and alert when he struck again. He couldn’t make mistakes… not with the feds sniffing around. So he’d wait. He’d stick to his plan and make sure it all remained in line and tight. No mistakes.

He got to his feet and walked inside, locking the door behind him.

As he prepared for bed, a smile touched his face,
