A couple of days later Reuben called in at the Naval Recruitment Office in Liverpool and met with a Navy lieutenant after filling out a questionnaire.

“So, what can I do for you, Sergeant?”

“I’m currently in England on a temporary assignment with the U.S. Army,” he explained. “I’ve become engaged to a girl I met in Brighton and we’re planning on making our home here in England. I was wondering about the possibility of enlisting in the Royal Navy.”

The recruiter looked over the form Reuben had completed. “Your military experience and training are very impressive,“ he said. “Much more valuable commodities than you might think. As a first step, of course, you'd have to process out of the American army. But once here I don’t think there’s much doubt that we’d welcome you with open arms, Sergeant.”

Reuben stood, more than a little surprised at the reception he had received. “In that case I won’t take up any more of your time, sir. I’ll get the wheels in motion as soon as I get back to the States.”

Four months later he was back in England and enlisted in Her Majesty's Royal Navy at the rank of Able Seaman.
