8. In the 1870s weighing scale companies began producing their machines for people as well as for foods and produce. The first public penny-scales began to appear on railway stations, in shops and restaurants, hotels, cinemas, banks and office buildings and started bringing in the millions. In the beginning they played you a tune, read your fortune and could even ‘Speak Your Weight’, though they soon became silent. Bathroom scales arrived soon after the First World War making dieting something that could be measured from home and the mother’s dieting history became her daughter’s dieting future.
