Chapter Fourteen

When the Veil is Torn

The New York Public Library

“You ain’t abandoning him, sometimes things and people are taken out of your life for a reason...” she said rather cryptically. “Don’t worry though, if it’s meant to be, it will be. A trial separation will show you if you should truly get married or if you’re simply wasting your time.”

“Don’t tell me that you had something to do with Eric’s disappearance,” I said.

Her lips formed a half-smile and she sucked in her cheekbones and tilted her head as if hiding a dark and deadly secret which I didn’t want to know the answer to. Fury raged under my bones. I didn’t trust people easily, but when I did, I did with my entire heart, and I protected those who I loved and that person was Eric.

“You worry too much,” she laughed as if reading my thoughts. “Go on now; open the first few pages of that book.”

Reluctant, yet curious, I started to open the heavy cover. Inside the pages were perfectly preserved, pristine beige as if they had not been touched by the decay of time. The first page had emblazed on it a huge tree much like the one that was on the cover. Above the tree, there were the words, The Ancestors. Each branch extended into the sky, at the end of each branch there rested a picture of a woman. Each one was more beautiful than the next. Each woman was like Ani, they wore indigo headdresses, had keen lively eyes and lips that were painted an earthy red.

Sure enough, my spirit friend, Ani was at the top of the tree, the head honcho. I scanned the branches to identify someone who could have been my mother unfortunately; it was vastly difficult as it could have been anyone. The strange thing about the tree was that there were no names or dates only branches and faces. “This is a very odd way to track The Ancestors,” I said in a semi-mocking tone which prompted the thunder outside to grow louder and a flash of lightning to burst into the room. Clearly, the ancestors did not like to be mocked. It wasn’t like me to become a broody teenager, but suddenly, I had transformed into one.

“It’s on that way on purpose,” she said. “The ancestors only reveal themselves to you if they want. You may not know them, or their names, but they sure as heck know who you are,” she said simply letting out a deep throaty laugh. “Ya can run, but you can’t hide.”

“You’re at the very top, so, you’re the head of the clan so to speak. The root of where I come from so to say. If you are telling me the truth.”

“Yes,” she said simply. “I am telling you the truth if you choose to believe it. We have been fighting among ourselves to find the proper heir for the legacy for a good old while now, I had the final say and I chose you.
