CHAPTER SIXTEEN

After waiting for Jace and her team to circle again and strategically help the dragons on the ground by picking off targets and breathing fire down on one of the beasts that had gotten out of control, we charged.

I led my team straight for the handler that had already been injured, using magic to help our bodies move faster and the magic I had in controlling air to buffet the handler toward us and aid us in moving even faster.

The handlers barely had time to react, all of them spreading out before I exhaled fire on the intended target. It shrieked as I pulled up, and Kryos did the same again, catching it in a second wave of molten spray.

All the dragons around me did the same, trying to get the other two handlers or give this one nowhere to flee. By the time the flames cleared, we had all pulled up and banked. The handlers had spread even further, one shifting further back at a speed that none of us could have kept up with.

I growled and roared my anger, but the closer two handlers attacked, coming at me and Cios. Kryos got in the way of the one coming for me and cut at its wing with his claws, giving Douglas time to shoot his assault rifle and shred the opposite wing. Although it tried to repair them, we’d already damaged this handler, and its regeneration was slower than before.

It fell several feet before it could begin to recover, and by then, I had come back around and slammed into it again. Although they were learning our tactics and trying to get away from us, we had the advantage of numbers and managed to keep the handler hemmed in.

To my surprise, it grew an entirely different set of wings. Lots of smaller ones protruded from its back and kept it more stable as it spun and wove out of our way. The handler on the other side of us, battling Cios and half of the dragons I’d flown over with, soon mimicked his look.

Our battle had just gotten a lot harder.

For the next few minutes, it was all we could do to avoid being hit by the handlers, their limbs growing into sharp appendages at the end of thin, light, and maneuverable bodies. I had to swerve and roll more than once, hoping that Douglas could hold on.

Despite my fears for the soldier on my back, he was able to score a few more hits as I came up behind the handler, and Kryos took its attention. His blast ripped off one of the more delicate wings, and it let out a strange screeching sound.

Again, we all hurried toward it, trying to take advantage of its struggles before it could regenerate and recover. This time, we got the upper hand, and I managed to claw off another wing before reeling out of reach of the sharp limbs. One caught me on the edge of the tail, but it barely did damage, only pulling off a couple of smaller scales.
