Chapter 5

Hubert found a spare toothbrush in his tiny bathroom. “You go first.” He gestured at the bathroom and moved out of Charles’s way. Nerves swelled as Charles finished brushing his teeth. Where would he sleep? The hut was tiny; there was no extra bedroom. The couch was too small to sleep on, so unless Hubert had a mattress tucked away somewhere, it meant sharing a bed.

Charles opened the bathroom door and peeked outside. He could hear Hubert in the kitchen and went there. Hubert was putting ground coffee in the coffee maker.

“Are you making coffee?” Charles had believed they were going to bed. Maybe it was only he who was going to bed. Hubert might need some alone time and planned to have a cup of coffee in front of the TV before getting some sleep.

“Preparing for tomorrow. I’m tired in the mornings, it’s nice to have the coffee prepared so I only have to press the button when I get up.”

“Ah.” Charles nodded. Hubert had to go to work in the morning. Charles hadn’t forgotten he’d lost his job, but it wasn’t until now it hit him. He had nowhere to be tomorrow. What would he do? He couldn’t even get into his apartment.

“The bedroom is through there.” Hubert pointed through the living room at the only possible door. “Crawl in. I’ll be with you in a bit.”

Crawl in? They were sharing a bed? Heat grew in Charles’s gut, but it was soon followed by a shiver. He was still too damn cold.

The bedroom was tiny, like everything else. A queen-sized bed was pushed against the wall and yet he had to sidestep as soon as he entered the room since the footboard blocked part of the doorway. There was a bedside table with two drawers, a lamp, an old-fashioned alarm clock, and a book on top. And against the other wall, there was a dresser.

Charles took off the socks, and the hoodie, but when he pulled the sweats down, he realized he had no underwear and quickly yanked them up again. Had Hubert been there he’d have flashed him. Shaking his head, he climbed into the bed. He crawled so he was closest to the wall since it looked like Hubert was using the bedside table and wrapped the cover tight around himself.

“All right?” Hubert appeared in the doorway.

“Yes. Thank you.”

Hubert went over to the bedside table and turned on the lamp before he switched the overhead light off and pulled his T-shirt over his head. His chest was covered in dark curls, and there was a scar running across the right side of the ribcage.

“What happened?” He gestured, though how Hubert would know what he meant, he didn’t know.

Hubert looked down at himself. “Oh, that?” He ran his thumb along the scar, and Charles nodded.

“Crashed with the bike. It’s seven years ago now.”

“Ouch.”

“Yeah.” Hubert grimaced. “Spent a couple of weeks in the hospital. Could’ve been worse though.”

Charles nodded. “What happened?”

Hubert shrugged. “I don’t remember. I don’t remember going on the bike, and I don’t remember much of anything of the following two days after.
