The Chantays, Pipeline (1963). Dot Records.

This is a great surf album, including the favorite “Sleep Walk,” slower than that recorded by the Ventures and more haunting, á la the Santo & Johnny original. Also interesting is “Banzai,” another hard-driving tune á la “Misirlou,” and “Riders in the Sky,” a very “Pipeline”-esque cover of the old country ghost song.

The Cover

This 1963 album has a very simple four-color cover featuring only the band, album title and track list, looking almost as though it’s been cut and laid out by hand. That’s a decent look for a surf band—in the days of the Rendezvous Ballroom, they were often advertised on crude handbills.
