Chapter 6

Caleb woke up in the back of his Jeep, shivering under the fleece blanket he kept there in case he ever got stranded on the highway. He sat up, disoriented and startled to find himself naked. It was pitch dark outside the vehicle, though a few street and porch lamps provided enough illumination for him to see that the street was deserted.

"What the hell?" he blurted, unable to remember how or why he'd ended up here. Had Desmond kicked him out after an argument? Had he pranced across the porch steps and front yard wearing nothing but a blush, and in below-freezing weather?

He shook his head to clear it, and a few images swam into focus. They were disconnected, though, like random pieces shaken out of a box containing a jigsaw puzzle. He recalled being in the apartment, in bed with Desmond, only to be driven outside by some inner force he couldn't understand, much less define. He felt almost like he did when the time came for… "No!" he barked, slamming his fist into his open palm. No way could he be experiencing transformation early. He had less than two weeks until he had to worry about that. He'd worked it all out with the calendar before he'd ever left for school.

Maybe he'd drunk too much at dinner. He and Desmond had ordered wine at the restaurant. He thought he'd consumed only one glass, but denial often accompanied bouts of heavy alcohol consumption. A blackout might explain a lot.

Wrapped in the blanket, he dashed through the snow and back across the porch, wincing at the pain as his bare feet made contact with the ice. To his relief, no one in the neighborhood seemed to be awake yet. Someone— Desmond, perhaps—had left the front door propped open with a folded newspaper. His apartment door was unlocked, too. Caleb had a vague impression of him throwing the deadbolt earlier. He couldn't remember why.

He walked in and found Desmond asleep on the sofa without a blanket, dressed in his usual brown corduroys and a black hoodie. A lamp was on beside him.

Hearing Caleb come in, Desmond stirred and sat up. "Are you okay?" Caleb asked.

Desmond's sleepy face registered surprise. "You're

asking me? You're the one who's been out in the snow bareassed. I looked for you until almost midnight. Then I gave up."

"Yeah, I'm fine." Caleb blushed. "I ended up in my Jeep."

"I checked there," Desmond said, shaking his head. "You must have come back later."

"I guess so. Desmond, what the hell happened?" "Another great question, but I don't know why

you're asking me. What were you doing outside in the first place? You were asleep one minute and running out the door the next."

"I told you I sleepwalk."

"Stark naked in the snow in January? Damn, Caleb." Caleb shrugged. "It's not a choice. I'm not in my right head when I do it." He eyed the deadbolt, which seemed intact. "How did I get out? I thought you'd locked the door."

"You opened it.
