Two guards turned into the side alley where she was hiding. Despite all her anger, she couldn’t risk being seen. On silent feet, she crept back the way she had come and vanished back into the dark forest.

Robyn ran along the earthen paths between the trees. Here the air was cooler and the shadows longer. Especially the shadow coming up behind her. She slowed down and squeezed through a gap into a quiet copse. The shadow had gone, but the sound of boots slipping over mossy stones was audible to her ears. Then came the smell of a familiar human being. She knew who was behind her, what she didn’t know was whether to relax or stay alert. Gwen had told her that to attack was better than to run, so she pressed her hands into fists and spun around with a sharp cry.

Rose jumped backward in shock.

“Why on earth did you do that? You scared me!” She fumed, once she regained her composure.

“I wanted to,” Robyn said. “Until I know whether you’re friend or foe?”

Rose put her hands on her hips. “When was I not your friend?”

“Maybe when you became Hunter’s personal assistant.”

Rose flushed violently. “What else could I do after you left me? Why didn’t you tell me you were going?”

Robyn’s gut clenched. “Things happened so fast, there was no time.”
