On the way back to Main Street, Tate’s phone rang. He pressed the answer button on the display and put it on speaker phone, shooting a look at Zion. “It’s the high school,” he said, and she straightened in her seat. “Hello?”

“Mr. Mercer, I’m James Beam, the Principal of Sequoia High.”

“Jim Beam, really?” said Tate under his breath, making Zion cover her mouth with a hand to hold in a laugh. Tate gave her a wink. “Yes, Mr. Beam, how are you, sir?” he said louder.

“I’m fine, Mr. Mercer. I wanted to talk to you about Logan.”

Tate felt a sinking in his gut. He wasn’t prepared to take a call from the principal. “How can I help you?”

“I wonder if you could come by the school whenever you have a moment. Sooner would be better.”

“Come by the school?” Tate felt his mouth go dry. This definitely wasn’t good. “Is something wrong with Logan?”

Zion put a hand on his arm and he realized his voice had taken on a dangerous edge.

“No, no, Mr. Mercer, Logan’s fine. In fact, he’s in class. I just have a young woman here who’s desperate to talk to you.”

“What?” Tate said in bewilderment. “What are you talking about, Mr. Beam?”

“Can you come to the school, Mr. Mercer?”

Tate glanced at the clock. Bill Stanley would be leaving in a few minutes. “I have to make arrangements for my store, but I’ll be over as soon as I can.”

“Excellent. We’ll see you then.”

“Drop me off. I’ll hold down the fort for you,” said Zion.

He squeezed her hand. “You’ve been a rock through all of this, you know that? I’m glad I accepted when you asked me on our first date.”

She frowned at that. “You kissed me in my store in front of everyone.”

“Oh, right.”

“And I told you to ask me on a proper date after that. You did the asking.”

“If that’s how you remember it,” he said and she laughed, pushing his shoulder. He pulled up in front of the Hammer Tyme and leaned over, kissing her, then he looked her in the eyes. “You are the most perfect woman in the world.”

She gave him a coy look. “If you’re going to say things like that,” she said, then she kissed him again. Finally, she straightened the collar of his shirt. “Good luck in the principal’s office.”

He sighed. “I seriously thought it was going to be more like having a roommate, not like having an insta-teenager with the typical insta-teenager problems.”

She brushed her thumb over his bottom lip. “You’re doing a great job.”

He lowered his forehead to her shoulder. “Remind me of that when he goes to prison, okay?”

“He’s not going to prison. Now go and I’ll see you later.” She eased out of the truck and disappeared inside the hardware store.

Tate drove to the high school, pulling into the visitors’ parking lot. The high school was housed in one two story building with a smattering of other buildings behind it. As he got out of the truck, he could see students moving through the snow drifts to get to the buildings in back.
