Zion found the key under the dead plant by the door and they stepped into the apartment. Tate immediately went to the kitchen and pulled everything out from beneath the sink, but he didn’t find any rat poison. He did the same in Dee’s bathroom.

Zion searched the living room, lifting the couch cushions, while Tate tackled the bedroom. He found a pipe and rolling papers in a drawer and he even found a business card for Dr. Jerm’s Herbal Remedies with a phone number and for heaven’s sake, a business license number. He pulled out his phone and entered the address into the internet search engine. It came up as a storage unit. No wonder Dee had to make contact with him. This guy wasn’t exactly keeping a low profile, but he didn’t have a storefront on Main Street.

Zion met him in Dee’s room, staring at the mattress on the floor and the disarrayed bedclothes. “I hate that he lives like this.”

Tate shrugged. “I don’t exactly make my bed every morning myself.”

“But do you sleep on the floor?”

Tate stared at the bed. “No.” He held out the card. “Can you add this to your notes?”

She pulled the pad and pen out of her purse and took the card. “You know, we make a good team.”

Tate rose to his feet and went to the closet opening the door. He wasn’t touching that, no way. The more time he spent with her the harder it was to think of her with David. She was so different than his ex-wife, so easy-going and genuine. She couldn’t hide her emotions no matter how hard she tried.

She put the card back in the nightstand as Tate rifled through Dee’s clothes. A few pairs of jeans hung from hangers, but the majority of his clothes were wadded in a pile in the middle of the floor.

Zion wandered out of the room again, while Tate searched through the clothes. A moment later she called to him. Tate rose to his feet and closed the closet door, finding Zion standing in a corner of the kitchen. She pointed to a wall phone and attached to it was an answering machine.

Tate walked over to her. “He has an answering machine?” he asked, bewildered. No one he knew even had a landline anymore.

“Yeah, and listen to this.” She pushed the button and a male voice came over the line. “I swear to God, you brain-dead idiot. Stay away from my girl. You come sniffing around her again and I’ll kill you! You hear me, I’ll kill you dead!”

Tate rubbed the back of his neck. Dee certainly wasn’t telling him everything about his relationship with Merilee, that much was obvious. He looked at his cell phone, marking the time. He really needed to get to the Hammer Tyme and open up. Playing cop was interfering with his business, but the more he poked this case, the more it seemed there was to discover.
