Chapter Twelve
Cohl saw her coming, followed by the big mass of Beckye grinning a âyou in big trouble, boyâ smile. He swore softly and threw the box of supplies into the back of the Traka-Nor transport before Tess could use it against him as a lethal weapon. He didnât need a mind-gazer to tell him that she was not pleased. Too bad. He wasnât backing down. No one was more unhappy about this than he but the only thing worse than losing the woman of your dreams was doing it face-to-face.
He should have left quietly this morning, slipped out without a sound. Instead, he couldnât resist one last kiss, just one more to live on. Then sheâd pulled him down into that sweet, warm, beautiful body of hers and there was no way he could escape. Not that he wanted to. One final moment of ecstasy before returning to a life that until now heâd thought was perfect.
He drew himself up for a battle he didnât want to wage and turned to face her. Her green eyes flashed against that fiery auburn hair, a startling combination. God, she was amazing when she was mad. It was almost worth the argument.
She stopped about two meters from him and calmly crossed her arms. âGoing somewhere?â She could freeze air with that tone.
He pursed his lips and gave her a cursory glance. No weapons. Good. He could still take her.
âI didnât want to wake you.â There. Chivalry lives.
Tess stared a hole through him. âCoward.â
Hmm. Apparently, her idea of chivalry differed from his. He ran a hand through his hair and glanced around the shuttle bay at the crew members watching the proceedings with morbid fascination.
âWe should probably clear the deck for this one, huh?â he asked Tess.
She shifted her weight to her other hip. âOnly if you want to keep your dignity.â
Cohl eyed her determined stance, her blazing green eyes. Never boring. Life with her was never boring.
âEveryone out,â he ordered aloud.
A collective groan passed through the crew as they shuffled out, muttering among themselves. Cohl could have sworn he spotted Beckye and Sahto making some sort of wager.
Then there was nothing but silence and simmering rage.
âI want you out of this, Tess,â he said, taking the offensive. âI canât protect you and I wonât put you through any more. Itâs as simple as that. You are going home where you belong.â He casually picked up another container and tossed it into the cargo hold.
She never flinched as the container landed with a hard thump. âYou werenât going to tell me. You were prepared to leave without even a good-bye.â
âI said good-bye this morning.â He winced as soon as the words came out. It was as if he had a latent death wish or something.
âThatâs right,â she said coolly. âAfter you made love to me. How could I forget?â
He exhaled. âIâm sorry. I should have told you yesterday.â
âYesterday? You knew this yesterday and you didnât say anything?â she snapped.
Cohl rubbed his neck.
