Nebraska is rich with Native American culture and history and it is the site of the Omaha, Ponca, Santee Sioux, and Winnebago tribes. Crazy Horse and Red Cloud were two famous leaders of the Oglala Sioux tribe. Dr. Susan LaFlesche Picotte, of the Omaha tribe, was the countryâs first Native American woman to become a medical doctor.
Throughout the summer months, the Nebraska tribes celebrate Native American rituals and traditions with dancing, singing, drumming, and colorful regalia of the powwow. Each dance performed at a powwow has its own style but one of the oldest expressions of a traditional culture is the Grass Dance. The regalia of the dancer is decorated with long, colorful fringe which depicts the tall, blowing grass on the prairie. This enhances the graceful moves of the dancersâ bodies as they sway in the imaginary breeze. No other event captures the Native American spirit like the social celebration of the powwow.
Powwow begins with the letter P.
Itâs a cultural celebration, with colorful regalia and tribal dancing, of the Native American Nations.
