Ivory plaque with Christ crowning Romanos and Eudokia. Constantinople. Cabinet des Médailles, Paris.

Christ crowns husband and wife as emperor and empress of the Romans. Current consensus is that they are Romanos II and his wife and that the plaque was produced between 945 and 949; the alternative would be Romanos IV and Eudokia Makrembolites between 1068 and 1071.

Ivory triptych with Deisis and Saints. Constantinople. Tenth century. Palazzo Venezia, Rome.

This is one of three similar triptychs from the tenth century and perhaps the earliest. The inscription referring to Constantine has been associated with Emperor Constantine VII and used to support a dating between 945 and 959. Study of the saints represented on this triptych (thirteen on the front and eight on the reverse) has led to the suggestion that it was given by the emperor to a church dedicated to St Severianos (extreme right, lower register) and Agathonikos (extreme left, lower register).
