CHAPTER 21

Guin looked for a quiet place for the two of them to chat, but there didn’t appear to be a sitting area nearby. So she settled for a quiet looking spot down the hall from Birdy’s room, at the end of the corridor.

“Yes?” said Bettina, crossing her arms.

Guin took a deep breath and exhaled.

“So, you probably know Birdy better than anyone,” she began, hoping to soothe the other woman. “Do you know of anyone, anyone at all, who might want to harm him? Anyone who might have been jealous of him, of his success, or who he had butted heads with?”

“Of course people were jealous of Birdy,” said Bettina, as if Guin’s question was the stupidest one she had ever heard. “That’s the lot of famous people like Birdy. But want to kill him?” She looked down at Guin, as though such an idea was ludicrous. “Everyone loves Birdy.”

“Including your sister, apparently,” Guin said, not allowing herself to be intimidated, even though Bettina towered above her.

Bettina did not look pleased.

“Who told you that?” she snapped.

“It doesn’t matter,” said Guin. “What matters is, would Briony ever do anything to harm Birdy?”

Bettina looked like she was about to say something, something not particularly nice. Then her expression changed, and she sighed.

“I know Bri was very upset when Birdy broke up with her and nursed a grudge against him for a while. But she’s moved on.”

“Did you know that she currently has a show in Naples?”

For a minute, Guin thought Bettina was going to feign ignorance.

“I did, but Naples isn’t exactly close to Sanibel,” she replied. “I should know. It must have taken me nearly two hours the other day. I don’t know how you people can stand the traffic. It’s worse than the Hamptons.”

Guin sympathized with her about the traffic. During high season, it did get pretty bad on Sanibel. But it wasn’t as though Naples was at the other end of the country.

“Anyway, what’s your point?” asked Bettina.

“Is it possible Briony found out about Birdy being on Sanibel and came here?”

“I told you, the two of them were over years ago.”

“Yes, but isn’t it possible she still had feelings for him? And when she found out he would be on Sanibel, she decided to pay him a visit?”

“Look, I may not get along with my sister, but no way would she take a shot at Birdy.”

“What about poisoning him?” asked Guin.

“Poisoning him?” asked Bettina.

“When Birdy was in here before, the doctor said he had been poisoned.”

“I thought it was some bug he had picked up in Argentina, or a bad shrimp.”

“Well, according to the tests the hospital ran, it was mandragora poisoning.”

“Mandragora poisoning?” asked Bettina, looking confused.

“It’s a root. Better known as mandrake. Some people take it to help with ulcers or constipation or joint pain. But take too much, and it can make you very ill.”

Bettina continued to look at Guin.

“The doctor thought Birdy might have taken some the day of the party, but Birdy swore he never touched the stuff.
