I put down the book for a moment. How could Tony doubt that I was part of the “plan” when I was the senior guy there? And what did he mean “without authorization?” Other than me as his captain, whose authorization did he need and for what?

I remembered Yealand being upset that Tex hadn’t chosen him for the mission. Tex hadn’t taken any of his usual go-to men. As things turned out, it didn’t end well, and by not taking his usual, he saved their lives. Did he know what was going to happen in that village? If so, why go knowing a sacrifice was imminent?

Survivors were not expected, other than those who were needed to achieve the objective. Three half-starved Japanese found, not bound but hidden. They were barely able to speak their own language. They couldn’t speak English because that would have made the task more difficult.
